Gas prices surge to almost $6 per gallon in Los Angeles area Southern California drivers are feeling the squeeze of high gas prices yet again. On Monday morning, the price of a regular gallon of gas averaged about $5.92 in the Los Angeles area, according to AAA.That's a 5-cent increase from the day before and nearly 40 cents more than a week ago.For comparison, the national average is $3.88 per gallon.Prices are high now, but they may be headed for a gradual decline as fall approaches, according to AAA.What's keeping them elevated for now is high oil costs, as prices "have jumped several dollars to hover around $90 per barrel," AAA said. “Oil costs are putting upward pressure on pump prices, but the rise is tempered by much lower demand,” AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said in a statement. “The slide in people fueling up is typical, with schools back in session, the days getting shorter, and the weather less pleasant. But the usual decline in pump prices is being stymied for now by these high oil costs.” While prices are elevated, the...

Mixed bag for climate bills as California lawmakers wrap 2023 season

Published Mon, 16 Dec 2024 18:45:08 GMT

Mixed bag for climate bills as California lawmakers wrap 2023 season California lawmakers passed some precedent-setting climate and environment bills before the clock ran out Thursday, Sept. 14 on the 2023 legislative session. That includes a first-of-its-kind bill to make big corporations disclose their greenhouse gas emissions. Others would make it harder for oil companies to drill along the coast or abandon old wells, and still others would make it easier for offshore wind projects to advance. Those bills need signatures from Gov. Gavin Newsom by mid-October to become law. If they aren’t vetoed, they’ll be added to the list of climate bills Newsom signed earlier in the session, including one that lets California regulators penalize oil companies found to be gouging drivers at gas pumps and one protecting Joshua trees.Lawmakers also recently passed a resolution by state Sen. Lena Gonzalez, D-Long Beach, to endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, which is a global call to end new fossil fuel exploration and expansion, phase out existing prod...

Kurtenbach: The 49ers had their first look at this season’s toughest opponent (and no, it wasn’t the Rams) On Sunday, the 49ers finally reckoned with a force that could stop them from winning the Super Bowl this season. And no, it wasn’t their Week 2 opponent, the Rams.It was injuries. After escaping from Week 1 with enviable health, the harsh reality of the NFL showed up in Week 2.The 49ers’ top-line talent stands out from the rest of the league this season. And that top-line talent stands out from the rest of the 49ers roster.Yes, the drop-off is always significant between star player and reserve, but the 49ers have, in the past, built deep rosters under general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. It’s a strategy that has paid off. That is not how this 2023 team was built, though. No, on this squad, the difference between star and backup is precipitous this season at several positions. It’s enough to torpedo a season. And the position where the difference between the best and the rest is largest might be wide receiver.Related ArticlesSan Francisco 49ers |...

Bill addressing understaffing, medication errors in pharmacies now headed to gov's desk (BCN) -- A bill seeking to address understaffing and medication errors in chain pharmacies in California is now headed to Gov. AB 1286 creates first-in-the-nation regulations to crack down on understaffed chain pharmacies making medication errors, Haney's office said. They added that if the bill is signed into law, California will become "a national leader in pharmacy safety."
