ORCHARD PARK, New York — Friday is Hurricane awareness day for the Broncos’ field goal unit. That’s the time each week when kicker Wil Lutz and the rest of the group work through the kicking equivalent of tracing a hurricane evacuation route along Lake Erie shore. You drill it. You know it. You try your best to pay attention to it. And you never use it.Until that one freak time it comes up.Monday night, the storm finally arrived for kicker Wil Lutz and company. The Broncos nearly got swallowed up by the water, but close doesn’t count when it comes to drowning.“Yeah, I mean, this is what you sign up for as a kicker,” Lutz said after he hit a walk-off, 36-yard field goal to lift Denver to a 24-22 victory against Buffalo here.Well, not entirely.Lutz arrived at a blustery Highmark Stadium having kicked in 105 NFL games. Never in that span over seven-plus seasons had he encountered an instance that Denver calls “hurricane.”That’s the situation that arises occasionally at the end of a ...

Opinion: Reckoning with Colorado’s racist roots for a more equitable future

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 03:52:48 GMT

We are experiencing a systematic attack on the truthful telling of history. This should concern us all.At a time when dedicated national efforts attempt to prevent or reframe the teaching of Black history and the history of other oppressed groups, it is more important than ever that we work to fully understand and reckon with our past.Racial justice studies are an important tool that governments use to acknowledge history, clarify how history informs social and economic realities in the present, and make informed decisions about how to write a stronger tomorrow, both for historically oppressed groups and for us all.Recent in-depth coverage from The Denver Post highlighted Colorado’s own tragic legacy of segregation, redlining, violence, and government-backed systematic racism faced by Black Coloradans. This dark part of our state’s history is something that many children won’t learn about in school. As a result, many Colorado natives remain uninformed and unaware of the way that rac...

Just days after a massive blaze destroyed part of the 10 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles, another fire broke out under a different freeway. Calls regarding active flames first came in from commuters driving near the interchange of the 105 and 110 freeways in South Los Angeles around 7 a.m. Tuesday morning. Footage from Sky5 showed a patch of land burning next to the transition ramp between the eastbound 105 and southbound 110 near residences on a dead-end street.  10 Freeway fire set with ‘malice intent,’ Newsom says According to KTLA 5’s Rich Prickett, the flames appeared to have spread from an encampment to nearby vegetation. “From what we’re seeing here from Sky5, it would appear that it is some sort of encampment that is burning under the overpass,” Prickett said. “For right now it’s contained in that one little area.” Just days after a massive blaze destroyed part of the 10 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles, another fire broke out under a different free...

Slather it onto toasted crostini or crackers for an easy, fuss-free party snack.Camembert is Brie’s bolder, earthier sibling and pairs beautifully with the fruity flavor of pomegranate and persimmon, although Brie certainly can be substituted. Used up all your pecans in your pies? No problem, just substitute walnuts or almonds instead. You’ll see two varieties of persimmons in local markets. The flatter, tomato-shaped Fuyu persimmon is the one to use for this recipe. It’s less astringent than its bulbous cousin, the Hachiya, and can be sliced and enjoyed raw or briefly baked, as it is here. (Save the Hachiya for steamed puddings and other sweet baked goods.)Baked Camembert with Persimmon and RosemaryServes 8INGREDIENTS8-ounce round Camembe...
