The stakes are high for the Broncos in their matchup against the New England Patriots on Sunday, but head coach Sean Payton enjoys it. In fact, he craves these pressured situations.“It’s addictive,” he said. “As great as it feels when you win and all the things that go into it, it’s like the opposite when you don’t. It’s like misery — you can’t wait for the next weekend.”If the Broncos want to have any shot at the postseason, they have to win the final three games, starting with their home matchup on Christmas Eve. At 7-7, Denver has a 22% chance of making the playoffs, according to the New York Times postseason simulator. With a win over the struggling Patriots, the Broncos’ odds increase to 35% but a loss drops their chances to 3% — meaning their season is basically over.Payton said each hour has mattered since the Broncos have been in the playoff hunt. He added it’s much different compared to when a team is not competing for the postseason.“When you a...Broncos defense confident it can get back to dictating play after bad night vs. Lions: “We have to in order to win these next three games”

Vance Joseph’s defense powered the Broncos’ surge back into contention. The offense and special teams had its moments with timely touchdown drives or field-tilting returns, but wins followed once Denver’s defense transformed from one of the NFL’s worst groups into one of its best. That run, of course, came to a screeching halt Saturday night in Detroit when the Lions ripped the Broncos for 42 points, 448 yards and 29 first downs.Joseph’s group won’t see another offense with that kind of firepower over its final three weeks. But it also knows another dud will likely end the Broncos’ playoff hopes, especially considering its backed by an offense that’s been league average.“This time of the year, we know we have to win so you just throw it away, move on and play the way we know we can play,” inside linebacker Alex Singleton told The Denver Post. “We have to in order to win these next three games.”Denver Broncos Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph coaches on the sideline during the first h...Men’s basketball: After holiday hiatus, final Pac-12 run begins for CU Buffs

The holidays always offer an opportunity for reflection. For the Colorado men’s basketball team, there is plenty to be proud about in the body of work compiled during nonconference play. There also remain more than a few areas of improvement to consider as the Buffaloes take a few days off ahead of the start of the program’s final season in the Pac-12 Conference.CU completed the nonconference schedule with a thorough 98-71 victory on Thursday night against Utah Tech, improving to 9-2 while turning in another eye-popping offensive performance.Yet once the respite is over, and the Buffs regroup ahead of the Dec. 29 league opener at home against Washington (7 p.m., ESPNU), a few concerns will need to be addressed. On the court, head coach Tad Boyle hopes to see a more consistent defensive effort while finding a way to cut down on the club’s turnovers. In terms of personnel, the Buffs eagerly await the return of standout freshman Cody Williams.Williams has missed the past three games due ...Police thought confronting Maine shooter would be unsafe

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers rookie tight end Luke Musgrave caught a pass, got tackled and landed on the ball during a victory over the Los Angeles Chargers last month. In the moment, Musgrave ignored the pain.“I knew something was probably wrong, but it’s football,” he said on Friday. “You play through pain and then it usually hurts more after the game.”It hurt after the Nov. 19 game. A lot. With added intensity. And then he went to the bathroom and saw blood in his urine.“I put the pieces together pretty quickly, kind of knew that was a problem,” he said.Musgrave went to the emergency room, where he learned he had a lacerated kidney.
