As regulators review Kaiser Permanente’s proposed acquisition of a respected health system based in Pennsylvania, health care experts are still puzzling over how the surprise deal, announced in April, could fulfill the managed care giant’s promise of improving care and reducing costs for patients, including in its home state of California. KP said it would acquire Danville, Pennsylvania-based Geisinger — which has 10 hospitals, 1,700 employed physicians, and a 600,000-member health plan in three states — as the first step in the creation of a new national health care organization called Risant Health. Oakland-based Kaiser Permanente said it expects to invest $5 billion in Risant over the next five years, and to add as many as six more nonprofit health systems during that period.Industry experts believe KP’s aim is to build a big enough presence across the country to effectively compete with players like Amazon, Aetna CVS Health, Walmart Health, and...Investigation underway after man shot to death in South Gate

By Noah Trister | The Associated PressNo matter where the A’s play their home games in the coming seasons, the franchise has a lot of ground to make up before returning to relevance.Roster teardowns, one-sided trades and other poor personnel decisions have razed a team that until recently was one of the league’s shining examples of how to get the most out of less. Despite consistently having one of the league’s lowest payrolls, the A’s reached the playoffs three straight years from 2018-20 and six times in nine seasons starting in 2012.This season, the A’s are 53 games under .500 (33-88) and are going to give the 1962 New York Mets a run for their money for the worst record in the modern era.Along come the revitalized Baltimore Orioles, who open a weekend series at the Coliseum on Friday night, a recent league laughing stock that is providing a glimpse at how quickly fortunes can change – even on a modest budget. Two years after losing 110 games, the Orioles are suddenly overfl...Pilots made errors before crash near Lake Tahoe that killed all 6 on board, investigators say

Errors by the two pilots caused a business jet to go into an aerodynamic stall and crash near Lake Tahoe in 2021, killing all six people on board, federal investigators said. The co-pilot made a mistake in making a steeply banked left turn in an effort to fix a poor approach and line up with one of the runways at Truckee-Tahoe Airport in California, the National Transportation Safety Board said Thursday. The captain failed to correct the co-pilot’s error, and both ignored stall warnings from the plane, said the NTSB.The pilots were cleared to land on one of the airport’s two runways, which are perpendicular to each other, but calculated that they needed to use the longer runway because of the weight of their twin-engine Bombardier Challenger 605 jet.Related ArticlesCrashes and Disasters | ‘The absolute best’ – firefighters who died in California helicopter collision remembered Crashes and Disasters | Fatal Marin County plane crash report cites preliminary fi...Latest news
