ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek authorities issued evacuation orders for at least six seaside communities Monday as wildfires threatened vacation homes near Athens, with gusts of wind up to 70 kph (45 mph) pushing flames through hillside scrub and pine forests parched by extreme heat. Water-dropping planes and helicopters tackled the flames near Lagonisi, some 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of the capital, in an area with thousands of seaside vacation homes.The fire service reported a second large wildfire in a wooded area near the resort town of Loutraki, some 90 kilometers (55 miles) west of Athens, where a children’s summer camp and rehabilitation center for seniors were evacuated, local officials said.Greater Athens and much of southern Greece were on the second highest alert for wildfires Monday and Tuesday following a four-day heat wave that eased over the weekend. CHICAGO -- A 17-year-old boy is dead and another is injured after a shooting in South Chicago Monday morning.According to police, the boys were near the 8100 South South Shore Drive around 4:58 a.m. when individuals approached the boys on foot and opened fire. Police said one boy sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was transported to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead.The other boy sustained a gunshot wound to the ankle and was transported to Trinity Hospital in fair condition. Child thrown from carnival ride in Antioch, airlifted to hospital There were no other injuries reported and the individuals fled in an unknown direction. CHICAGO — Federal Judge James Zagel, who presided over some of Chicago’s biggest trials, has died.Zagel was on the bench for the corruption trial of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and also the landmark Family Secrets mob trial.As a prosecutor, he helped convict Richard Speck in the murders of eight nursing students.Zagel was known for his sharp legal mind, but also his love of the arts. His interests ranged from writing to acting. Park Ridge’s Pickwick Theatre to host live entertainment, to be called ‘Copernicus @ The Pickwick’ He penned a legal thriller and appeared in two Hollywood movies.Zagel died Saturday at the age of 82 after a long illness. AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A person was found unconscious then later pronounced dead on a sidewalk in east Austin on Sunday. Austin-Travis County EMS responded to calls about a deceased person on the sidewalk in the area of East Cesar Chavez and Comal Streets shortly after 6 p.m.The person was pronounced dead on the scene, according to ATCEMS. The Austin Police Department assisted ATCEMS with the call. KXAN is reaching out to APD and ATCEMS to see what caused the death and if it is considered suspicious. This is a developing story.
