‘Not a financial barrier’: How a local nonprofit pairs used equipment with kids who need it most Some students at Allenwood Elementary in Prince George’s County, Maryland, have recently had the chance to play baseball and tennis as part of their physical education class. The PE teacher’s budget wasn’t big enough for him to buy equipment for those sports, but because of a partnership with the organization Leveling The Playing Field, the instructor was able to increase the options in his equipment cabinet, according to Max Levitt, the organization’s founder.“That’s a benefit we hear all the time — kids learning less traditional sports because the equipment in our warehouse provided a PE teacher, coach, nonprofit with the resource that they cannot afford,” Levitt said.Levitt describes the nonprofit, which is approaching its 10th anniversary, as a food pantry for sports equipment. Every year, with the help of about 1,000 volunteers and a few paid staff members, over 300 local schools and other groups benefit from donated, used sports equipme...

Magic Johnson has declined multiple NBA ownership chances. The New York Knicks would interest him NEW YORK (AP) — Magic Johnson’s love for his Los Angeles Lakers has kept him from considering ownership of any other NBA team. The New York Knicks would be the one franchise that could make him have second thoughts.“I think it would be intriguing,” Johnson said Tuesday. “The only team I would actually probably think about is the New York Knicks.”Johnson arrived in New York for a speaking engagement at a YMCA from Washington, where the member of the Commanders’ new ownership group watched his NFL team lose to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.Once back in Los Angeles, he will gear up for his Dodgers to begin play in baseball’s postseason. But the basketball Hall of Famer repeatedly has passed on opportunities for ownership in the sport he knows best.Johnson named the Golden State Warriors, Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks as teams he turned down, rather than find himself in competition with the Lakers. The Knicks, though, offer something different.“I think because of the ...

Garnacho on target as Man United beats Crystal Palace 3-0 in League Cup defense MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Seven months after lifting the trophy, Manchester United made a successful start to its defense of the English League Cup on Tuesday by beating Crystal Palace 3-0.Alejandro Garnacho and Casemiro fired the holders into a 2-0 first-half lead at Old Trafford and Anthony Martial added a third after the break in the third-round match. It is now back-to-back wins for Erik ten Hag’s team, which has endured a disappointing start to the season. The dominant performance against an understrength Palace followed Saturday’s narrow victory at Burnley and will give United fans hope the team has turned its form around. The League Cup ranks fourth among English soccer’s most important trophies. But Ten Hag still savored last season’s success. Victory against Newcastle in February’s final at Wembley Stadium ended the club’s six-year wait for a trophy and saw Ten Hag deliver silverware in his first season at the club. He went on to also reach the FA Cu...

Dior triumphs melding women’s past and future, while Saint Laurent puts on study in power dressing PARIS (AP) — Amid the electric ambiance of strobe lights and an usually sweltering Parisian fall, Dior’s show Tuesday set in the Tuileries gardens witnessed a dazzling circus of stars. With Hollywood’s recent writers’ strike still on, insiders mused if Paris Fashion Week would be the season’s celebrity magnet – and the presence of Jennifer Lawrence, Charlize Theron, Elizabeth Debicki, and Kim Jisoo seemed to echo that sentiment. But the real star this season was the collection itself. Never one to shy away from a statement on feminism, the Italian couturier Maria Grazia Chiuri crafted an unusually subtle collection in predominantly black and white that fused echoes of the medieval and contemporary. Set against an art backdrop challenging time-worn perceptions on women’s roles, this show was not only a reminder that fashion is a mirror of society – but among her most accomplished so far. Here are some highlights of spring-summer 2024 ready-to-wear shows in Paris, including Saint...

As many as a dozen bodies found scattered around northern Mexico industrial hub of Monterrey

As many as a dozen bodies found scattered around northern Mexico industrial hub of Monterrey MEXICO CITY (AP) — As many as a dozen bodies were found Tuesday scattered around the northern Mexico industrial hub of Monterrey and its suburbs, including some of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the country. Prosecutors in the state of Nuevo Leon did not give a final tally of the number of dead because some of the bodies had been found in pieces or were dumped in plastic bags. But prosecutors confirmed at least seven bodies had been found, as well as five bags of body parts. Drug cartels in Mexico often leave dismembered bodies on streets, often with banners threatening officials or rival gangs. The grisly discovery came the day after drug cartel banners had been left around the city. It contrasted with Monterrey’s recent reputation for success after it was chosen as the site of a new Tesla car plant. Monterrey suffered waves of drug cartel violence in the 2010s, but had become more peaceful until Tuesday’s events.Source

The lawsuit by Republican Attorney General Andrew Bailey, who is campaigning to keep his seat in 2024, claimed a suburban St. Louis school board went into a closed session to talk about a student’s request to use a different bathroom. Debate during the closed portion of Wentzville’s June 14 Board of Education meeting veered from legal advice and details on the student request to broader policy discussions, board members Jen Olson and Renee Henke wrote in affidavits provided by Bailey’s office. Olson and Henke claimed members considered whether there should be exceptions for notifying parents when students request bathroom accommodations, such as in cases of parental abuse.Missouri’s Sunshine Law requires school board meetings to be open to the ...
