AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The Austin Police Department is investigating after a young girl died after being shot in north Austin overnight.Police are investigating the incident as a homicide. This is Austin's 31st homicide of 2023, APD said. MAP: Where have Austin’s homicides occurred in 2023? Police said they responded to a shots fired call around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning at the Bridge at Harris Ridge Apartment Complex on East Howard Lane. According to APD, officers and EMS arrived on scene and found a juvenile girl with head trauma, then began life-saving measures and took her to Dell Children's Hospital. AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Austin Police Department officers are searching for the suspected driver of a May hit-and-run in southeast Austin that left a 61-year-old woman injured. It happened around 9:50 p.m. May 20 at the intersection of East William Cannon Drive and Bluff Springs Road. APD responded to reports of an injured person lying on the roadway in the intersection. The preliminary investigation showed a darker-colored two-door sports car hit the woman while she was crossing the street. The woman was lifted off the ground, hit the vehicle's windshield, then fell and hit her head on the ground, according to APD. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a phone scam involving people impersonating police.The agency said it has received multiple reports from residents about callers claiming to be a sergeant who tries to gain financial information or money.“In some cases, it appears as if the call is actually coming the our non-emergency dispatch phone number,” said Laura Perkins, public information manager for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. “They are even using real Washington County deputies’ names to seem more convincing.”The callers allegedly say that the person has missed a court date or needs to clear a warrant.“While most agencies will not contact you by phone if you have a warrant, none will demand money or personal information in an attempt to clear the warrant,” Perkins said.Perkins provided these tips to avoid becoming the victim of a phone scam:Never give out any personal or financial information over the phone...UCSO: Inmate arrested, had makeshift shank under mattress

KINGSTON, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A 19-year-old inmate at the Ulster County jail was arrested after detectives found a makeshift weapon under his mattress, according to the Ulster County Sheriff's Office.
