Death toll in Maui wild fires expected to climb as FEMA identifies remans. Follow live updates By REBECCA BOONE (Associated Press)Follow live updates about wildfires that have devastated parts of Maui in Hawaii this week, destroying a historic town and forcing evacuations. The National Weather Service said Hurricane Dora, which passed south of the island chain, was partly to blame for strong winds that initially drove the flames, knocking out power and grounding firefighting helicopters.Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said he expects the death toll to rise in what is already the second-deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century. While walking down Front Street, he told reporters that some victims were positively identified Saturday.“I had tears this morning,” Green said, adding that he was afraid of what he would see at the disaster site.Operations were focusing on “the loss of life,” he added. The Federal Emergency Management Agency said it has been spray-painting cars and buildings on Front Street with an “X” to indicate they had received an i...

Editorial: At $181K, Massachusetts pot boss no bargain Cannabis board boss Shannon O’Brien is paid $181,722 to oversee the state’s weed rollout.Losing her cool and needing to apologize for it because a key staffer is leaving is unprofessional. It comes as the latest tally shows the Bay State has hit a new one-month high in legal weed sales — $136 million in July. The previous record was set in June when $132.9 million in sales was recorded. That’s a lot of gummies. It’s clear that in Massachusetts, Democrats take care of their own. O’Brien was a failed Democratic candidate for governor and has landed on her feet with this job. Her outburst just adds more questions than answers. It’s clear she was overreacting to the departure of the agency’s long-serving executive director, Shawn Collins. He earns $201,879 and even if he’s the reincarnation of Steve Jobs, a suitable replacement can be found at that hefty salary. So declaring we’re in a “crisis” is far from reality. Maybe O’Brien sh...

Yankees Notebook: With rotation in shambles, Michael King could get stretched out MIAMI — With their rotation battling multiple injuries, the Yankees could look to stretch Michael King out moving forward.King was asked to open Saturday’s game against the Marlins. The Yankees planned on him throwing two or three innings and about 40 pitches before turning to Jhony Brito for length.“It could be something where we continue to try and build him up a little bit while also recognizing his importance [in the bullpen],” Aaron Boone said of King. But that doesn’t necessarily mean King will move to a starter’s five-day schedule, as the Yankees will use the Swiss army knife as needed, pending his availability.Boone noted that there’s not much time left in the season for King to get stretched out for a starter’s full workload, but the Yankees can certainly get his pitch count up.“You probably can’t get him totally built up in a perfect world, especially with how we’re going to need him on a given day,” Bo...

Editorial: Two Boston City Councilors dead wrong about disease risk from Mass & Cass Councilors Ruthzee Louijeune and Gabriela Coletta are right about helping beleaguered businesses along the Methadone Mile and wrong about street sweepers.Keeping the cleaning apparatus assigned to just the Mass and Cass area is not akin to the panic experienced during the AIDS crisis. It’s just a careful consideration about how to best cope with an unsanitary encampment the Wu administration inherited and can’t seem to fix.The City Council backed a plan pitched by Councilor Erin Murphy to give businesses along the Mile a tax break for all the expenses they’ve incurred. Good first start!Murphy also wants to keep the street sweepers assigned to that area in that area. It’s not a guarantee of any public health breakthrough, but it does sends a message that this zone is a hazard that must be contained.Louijeune compared the request for separate cleaning equipment to what occurred during the AIDS/HIV crisis of the 1980s, when the Haitian community “was very much t...
