DeSantis says ‘Americans’ shouldn’t be tried in D.C. after Trump indictment

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 21:02:23 GMT

Gov. Ron DeSantis responded to former President Trump’s latest indictment by saying that “Americans” could not get a fair trial in the political “swamp” of Washington, D.C.“As President, I will end the weaponization of government, replace the FBI Director, and ensure a single standard of justice for all Americans,” DeSantis wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday evening.“While I’ve seen reports, I have not read the indictment,” DeSantis wrote. “I do, though, believe we need to enact reforms so that Americans have the right to remove cases from Washington, D.C. to their home districts. Washington, D.C., is a ‘swamp’ and it is unfair to have to stand trial before a jury that is reflective of the swamp mentality.”The District of Columbia’s population is 45% African American, according to 2022 U.S. Census estimates. It also is dominated by Democratic voters unlikely to support Trump but also DeSantis, a Republican who’s running agains...

Taylor Swift SoFi ticket prices are dropping

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 21:02:23 GMT

Taylor Swift’s historic run of six shows at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood is officially sold out, but there are thousands of tickets still available on the resale market. And prices appear to be going down, at least for some sections. Many “nosebleed” seats in the 500 level for Thursday’s opening night were listed in the $400 range as of Wednesday morning on Vivid Seats and StubHub - two of the most popular ticket exchange platforms. On Tuesday, 500-level tickets were significantly higher - in the mid-to-upper $600s and $700s.Obviously, tickets get more expensive as you get closer to the stage. Seats in SoFi’s 400, 300, 200 and 100 levels, and on the floor, generally ranged from $500 to nearly $7,000 on Wednesday, before fees.Taylor Swift performs onstage for the opening night of "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour" at State Farm Stadium on March 17, 2023, in Glendale, Arizona. ‘Unmovable’ jurors say they are deadlocked over whether San Jose State’s athletic trainer guilty of inappropriately touching athletes

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 21:02:23 GMT

SAN JOSE – On the second day of deliberations, the jury deciding the fate of San Jose State’s former athletic trainer accused of sexually assaulting female athletes during treatment sessions told the judge it is deadlocked on at least some of the counts.“We are deadlocked with at least one, and quite likely more, unmovable jurors on each side (guilty vs. not guilty,)” a jury wrote in a note to the judge Tuesday. “What do we do now?”“Continue your deliberations,” U.S. District Judge Beth Labson Freeman responded.By Wednesday morning, the eight women and four men were back in the jury room, reviewing testimony of one athlete in particular, a former soccer player who said that in 2019 Scott Shaw inappropriately touched her breast when he tucked her t-shirt under her bra and dragged his hands along the side of her breasts to treat a shoulder injury, and cupped her buttocks with his hands when he was placing a stimulation pad.The jury foreman requested testimony of a second former athlet...

Pac-12 survival: The downside risks, potential benefits and missing pieces within an Apple deal

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 21:02:23 GMT

Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff presented a media rights contract to the schools on Tuesday, with nothing less than the future of the century-old conference at stake.Details are sparse as the presidents and athletic directors digest the proposal, save for an ESPN report indicating Kliavkoff’s plan featured a heavy presence on Apple and a revenue structure that tied cash to subscriptions. Our reaction …1. Any chance to link arms with the richest, most influential, most innovative, savviest, smartest company in the world is something the Pac-12 should seriously consider, especially when that company is rapidly expanding its portfolio of sports properties and positioned to dominate the sports media landscape in the near future. But in this case, the details mean everything.2. The lean into streaming comes as no surprise. Kliavkoff signaled his strategy 18 months ago, telling a sports media podcast: “Whatever deal we do, it’s my goal to have our content available on any ...

Three more ex-employees accuse Lizzo of ‘abuse of power,’ praise the dancers who are suing the singer

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 21:02:23 GMT

Just hours after three former backup dancers for pop star Lizzo filed lawsuit against the singer Tuesday, accusing her of sexual harassment, fat shaming and creating a hostile work environment, three more former colleagues have come forward to say they witnessed or experienced mistreatment. The female former colleagues include another backup dancer for Lizzo and a filmmaker hired to make a documentary about the singer, who said she left the project after two weeks because she “was treated with such disrespect” and “witnessed how self-centered, arrogant and unkind she is.”“I felt gaslit and was deeply hurt, but I’ve healed,” filmmaker Sophia Nahli Allison said on Instagram about the singer. “Reading these reports made me realize how dangerous a situation it was. This kind of abuse of power happens far too often. Much love and support to the dancers.”The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court by three dancers, Arian...

MLB trade deadline analysis: Evaluating SF Giants’ moves, state of NL playoff race

Published Wed, 19 Feb 2025 21:02:23 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants prize pitch selection in their hitters; if it’s not something they can drive, lay off.At the trade deadline, Farhan Zaidi didn’t get anything in his hot zone.He laid off, stayed back and let other teams take their hacks. Inevitably, there will be some home runs. There will also be a lot of whiffs. (This is modern baseball, after all.)“Looking at the landscape of the National League, even post-trade deadline, I don’t really see a seismic shift,” Zaidi said Tuesday. “If the goal is to do something, we could’ve traded half our farm system for a fifth starter. Somebody would’ve happily agreed to that deal. But we didn’t do something just because there was nothing that made sense.”It wasn’t a particularly active trade market, especially in the National League, and to call the Giants one of the deadline’s losers — at The Athletic, Jim Bowden gave them a ‘D’ grade and called their lack of activity ...
